Garbage disposal repair and replacement in Jacksonville

A disposal that hums but will not turn is usually jammed, not broken. One that leaks from the body has usually reached the end of its life. Knowing which is which saves you money.

  • Jams and resets
  • Leaks and seals
  • Replacement and hookup

Jammed garbage disposal being freed under a Jacksonville kitchen sink
Quick answer

Garbage disposal repair in Jacksonville usually means clearing a jam, resetting the overload, fixing a leak at the sink flange or drain connection, or replacing a disposal that leaks from its body. We test the motor, fix what can be fixed and replace the unit only when it is worn out.

Jammed, tripped or worn out

Most disposal calls are one of three things. A jam, where something hard has wedged the flywheel and the motor hums. A tripped overload, where the disposal goes silent until the red button underneath is pressed. Or a worn-out unit, where the grinding chamber has corroded through and water leaks from the body.

Leaks at the top flange or at the drain pipe connections are repairable. Leaks from the body or the bottom of the unit are not, because the inside has corroded. We will tell you which you have before talking about replacement.

The jobs this page covers

01

Jammed or Humming Disposal

A hum with no spin means the flywheel is stuck. With the power off at the switch and the breaker, we free it from below with a hex key in the bottom socket, remove the object that jammed it, often a bone, fruit pit or a piece of glass, and reset the overload. Then we test the motor under load. If the motor hums but still will not turn after the jam is clear, the motor or its bearings have seized and the unit should be replaced rather than repaired.

Leaking Disposal

A leak at the top usually comes from the sink flange, where the plumber's putty or gasket has dried out, and resealing it fixes it. A leak at the side comes from the dishwasher inlet or the drain pipe connection, which usually needs a new gasket or clamp. A leak from the bottom or out of the body means the grinding chamber has corroded through, and the disposal needs replacing. We dry everything off and run water to find the exact spot before deciding.

03

Garbage Disposal Replacement

When a disposal is worn out, we replace it with a unit sized for your household, connect the drain, knock out the dishwasher inlet plug if a dishwasher is connected, and wire or plug it in. A forgotten knockout plug is one of the most common reasons a dishwasher stops draining right after a new disposal goes in. We run the disposal and the dishwasher together to prove both drain properly, and take the old unit away when you ask us to.

Disposals and Jacksonville drains

Disposals in Jacksonville homes share a drain with the dishwasher in most kitchens, and that shared connection is where many problems start. A slow disposal can back water into the dishwasher, and a new disposal installed without removing its knockout plug stops the dishwasher from draining at all. We check that connection on every disposal call, so fixing one appliance does not break the other.
