Gas dryer repair in Jacksonville, igniters to gas valve coils

A gas dryer that tumbles but will not heat usually lights for a few seconds, then quits, or never lights at all. The parts involved are small and well known, and the gas connection gets checked every time.

  • Natural gas and propane models
  • Igniter, coils, flame sensor
  • Connection leak-tested

Gas dryer burner flame being checked during repair in Jacksonville
Quick answer

Gas dryer repair in Jacksonville most often involves a cracked igniter, failed gas valve coils, a bad flame sensor or a blown thermal fuse. We test each part in the burner assembly, replace what failed, and leak-test the gas connection before leaving.

How a gas dryer lights

When a gas dryer calls for heat, a glowing igniter heats up, the flame sensor confirms it is hot, and the coils on the gas valve open to let gas flow. The flame lights off the igniter, the sensor sees the change and the igniter shuts off. If any part of that sequence fails, you get no flame or a flame that goes out.

Watching the burner through the sight hole tells us a lot. An igniter that never glows points at the igniter, the sensor or a fuse. One that glows, goes out, and no flame follows points at the valve coils. A flame that lights and dies after a minute points at the coils as they warm up.

Cost

What gas dryer repair costs

Gas dryer repairs are parts-and-labor jobs priced after diagnosis. The range here is national cost data for repairs on gas appliances generally; most igniter and coil repairs sit in the lower half.

  • Which ignition part. Coils, igniters and sensors are similar in price; a full valve costs more.
  • Connector condition. An old connector is replaced, not reused.
  • Stacked units. Gas stack units take longer to reach.
  • Vent work. A clogged vent adds cleaning time.

The jobs this page covers

01

Igniter and Flame Sensor

The igniter is a brittle silicon carbide bar that cracks with age and heat. We test it for resistance and look for a hairline crack. The flame sensor, sometimes called a radiant sensor, tells the valve when the igniter is hot enough and later confirms the flame. A sensor stuck open keeps the igniter glowing and never opens the valve. A sensor stuck closed lets the valve open without a hot igniter. Both parts are inexpensive and usually on our truck for the common models.

02

Gas Valve Coils

Two or three small solenoid coils sit on top of the gas valve. When they weaken, they open once the dryer is cold and then fail once they heat up, so the dryer lights at first and goes cold partway through the cycle. That on-and-off pattern is the giveaway. We replace the coil set as a kit, because replacing one leaves the older ones to fail next month, and then we run several heat cycles back to back to prove it.

03

Gas Smell at the Dryer

A faint whiff at ignition can be normal. A steady gas smell is not. If you smell gas, shut the gas valve behind the dryer, do not operate switches near it, leave the house and call your gas utility first. Once the utility clears it, we inspect the flexible connector, the shutoff valve and the valve body on the dryer, replace a worn connector and leak-test every joint with solution before the dryer goes back into service. We never relight a dryer that still shows a leak.

What is included

What every gas dryer visit includes

  • Burner sight-hole check through a cycle
  • Igniter resistance and crack check
  • Flame sensor and coil tests
  • Thermal fuse and high-limit test
  • Gas connector inspection
  • Leak test on every joint touched
  • Airflow check at the outside hood
  • Back-to-back heat cycle test

Gas dryers and long vent runs

With nearly 3,000 clothes dryer fires reported nationally each year and failure to clean at the top of the cause list, a gas dryer that is short on airflow deserves extra attention. A restricted vent makes the high-limit thermostat cut the burner again and again, which looks like an ignition fault. We measure airflow on every gas dryer call before we condemn a single part.

Step by step

How we repair a gas dryer

  1. 1

    Watch the burner

The sight hole tells us which part of ignition fails.

  2. 2

    Test the parts

Igniter, sensor, coils and fuses with a meter.

  3. 3

    Repair and leak-test

Every gas joint we touch is tested with solution.

  4. 4

    Run several cycles

Back-to-back heat cycles prove coil repairs.
