Water softener repair and service in Jacksonville

A softener quietly protects every water-using appliance in the house. When it stops regenerating, the hard water comes back and the scale starts building again in dishwashers, ice makers and water heaters.

  • Control valves and timers
  • Brine tank and salt bridges
  • Hardness reset

Salt bridge being cleared in a water softener brine tank
Quick answer

Water softener repair in Jacksonville usually means fixing a control valve or timer that stopped regenerating, breaking a salt bridge, cleaning a clogged brine line or injector, or resetting the hardness setting. We test the water before and after, so you can see the softener is working again.

How a softener stops softening

A softener exchanges hardness minerals for sodium in a tank of resin beads, then regenerates by rinsing the resin with brine from the salt tank. If the control valve stops starting regeneration, or the brine never reaches the resin, the resin fills up with minerals and hard water flows straight through.

Most softener problems are mechanical and affordable: a stuck valve motor or piston, a clogged injector, a crusted salt bridge or a power outage that reset the clock. The resin itself lasts many years unless it has been damaged by chlorine or iron.

The jobs this page covers

01

Softener Not Regenerating

If the salt level never goes down, the softener is not regenerating. We check the clock and settings first, since a power outage can reset older timers. Then we trigger a manual regeneration and watch each stage: backwash, brine draw, rinse and refill. A valve motor that will not turn, a worn piston and seals, or a failed circuit board stops the cycle. We replace the failed part, reprogram the valve for your household size and water hardness, and run a full cycle to confirm it.

Salt Bridge and Brine Tank Problems

In humid weather, salt in the brine tank can fuse into a hard crust that looks full but leaves an empty space underneath. Water cannot reach the salt, so the brine is too weak to regenerate the resin. We break up the bridge, clear any salt mush from the bottom, clean the brine well and check the float. A clogged brine line or injector also stops brine draw, and we clean both. Using a good quality pellet salt and not overfilling the tank helps prevent bridges.

03

Resin and Control Valve Service

If the valve works and brine is drawn but the water stays hard, the resin may be fouled with iron or worn out after many years. We test the water before and after the softener to see how much hardness is getting through. Fouled resin can sometimes be cleaned with a resin cleaner; worn resin is replaced. We also check the bypass valve, because a softener left in bypass after plumbing work is a surprisingly common reason for hard water.

Why softeners matter in Jacksonville

Jacksonville draws its water from the Floridan aquifer through limestone and dolomite, and most homes see moderate to hard water as a result. That hardness is what scales up ice maker valves, dishwasher spray arms and water heater elements over time. A softener that stopped working quietly lets all of that start again, so we test the water at the kitchen tap after every softener repair.

Cost

What softener repair costs

Softener repairs are priced after diagnosis. A salt bridge or reset is quick; a valve motor, piston and seal kit or a resin replacement costs more.

  • Valve brand and age. Parts for common valves are easy to find; older units may not be.
  • Resin replacement. The largest softener repair.
  • Brine system. Injectors and lines are inexpensive.
  • Water testing. Before and after tests are part of the visit.

No flat price over the phone. We price after the diagnosis, part and labor separately, so you can decide before any work starts.
