DetailsAn over-the-range microwave hangs on a wall plate, bolts through the cabinet above and doubles as the range vent. Done right it is solid and quiet. Done wrong it sags, rattles or vents grease into the cabinet.
Updated October 2026

Over-the-range microwave installation in Jacksonville means mounting the wall plate into studs, setting the blower to vent outside or recirculate, connecting to power in the cabinet above, bolting the microwave to the cabinet and testing both heating and the vent fan before we leave.
The wall plate carries most of the microwave's weight, so it has to be fastened into at least one stud, not just drywall anchors. The cabinet above needs holes for the top bolts and the power cord, and the cord needs an outlet inside that cabinet.
The blower has to match how your kitchen vents. If there is a duct to the outside through the wall or the roof, the blower is turned to exhaust that way. If not, it is set to recirculate through a charcoal filter. Getting this wrong leaves the microwave blowing smoke back into the kitchen.
Cost
Microwave installs are priced per job. A swap onto an existing wall plate location is simplest; a hood-to-microwave conversion or a new outlet adds to it.
No flat price over the phone. We price after the diagnosis, part and labor separately, so you can decide before any work starts.

The jobs this page covers
We locate the studs, set the wall plate level at the right height over the range, and fasten it into the framing with the manufacturer's template. The microwave hooks onto the plate, tilts up and bolts through the cabinet above, so the plate and the bolts share the load. We check the clearance from the cooktop meets the instructions, usually around 30 inches from the cooking surface to the bottom of the cabinet, and adjust the plate before drilling the cabinet so the bolts land where they should.

Over-the-range microwaves can exhaust up through the top, out the back or recirculate into the room. The blower inside is rotated to match, which is easy to forget. If your old hood or microwave vented outside, we connect to that duct and make sure the damper opens. If there is no duct, we set the unit to recirculate and install the charcoal filter. Recirculating microwaves need that filter replaced every few months to keep catching odors and smoke.
Swapping a range hood for a microwave changes the setup: the hood's wiring is often hard-wired, while the microwave needs an outlet in the cabinet above. The hood's duct may line up with the microwave's top exhaust, or it may need an adapter. We remove the hood, cap or reuse its wiring as appropriate, arrange the outlet the microwave needs, line the duct up with the exhaust and mount the microwave. When an outlet has to be added, we coordinate it before install day.
Kitchens in Riverside and other neighborhoods built before 1930 have often been redone more than once, so the wall behind the range can hide anything from old plaster to a newer stud wall. We confirm where the framing is before mounting the plate, and in plaster walls we drill carefully so the wall around the plate stays sound.
Step by step
Width, cabinet, outlet and duct.
Into studs, level, at the right height.
Vent out or recirculate.
Microwave secured, heat and vent tested.
Timing
A straight swap usually takes about an hour and a half. A hood-to-microwave conversion takes longer, especially if the duct needs an adapter, and when an outlet has to be added we schedule that before the microwave goes up.
FAQ
Most manufacturers ask for about 30 inches from the cooktop to the bottom of the cabinet above, with specific minimums in each model's instructions.
It plugs into an outlet in the cabinet above, and a dedicated circuit is recommended.
Yes, through the top or back, if a duct exists. Otherwise it recirculates through a charcoal filter.
Yes. We plan the outlet and duct connection ahead of time.
It moves less air than most hoods, which matters with heavy gas cooking.
