Ice maker repair in Jacksonville, from hollow cubes to no ice at all

An ice maker needs three things: water at the right pressure, a fill tube that is not frozen shut and a freezer cold enough to freeze the tray. When any of them goes, the bin runs empty in a day.

  • Built-in and door ice makers
  • Fill valves and filters
  • Water dispenser repair

Water inlet valve being tested during ice maker repair in Jacksonville
Quick answer

Ice maker repair in Jacksonville is usually a scaled or failed water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, a clogged filter or a worn ice maker assembly. We test water flow and the assembly, replace what failed, and confirm a full harvest cycle before we leave.

Why ice makers stop making ice

Every few hours the ice maker asks the water valve to open for a few seconds, fills the tray, waits for it to freeze, then twists or heats the tray to drop the cubes. If the valve sticks or scales up, the tray gets a trickle and you see small or hollow cubes. If the fill tube freezes, nothing reaches the tray at all.

Door ice makers on French-door and side-by-side units add a fan and a separate ice compartment, and those compartments are where frost and ice jams build up in a humid kitchen. We check water first, then the compartment, then the assembly itself.

Cost

What ice maker repair costs

Ice maker repairs are usually a valve, a filter, a fill tube thaw or a replacement ice maker module. The range here is national cost data for typical ice maker repairs.

  • Which part failed. A filter or thawed line costs much less than a new ice maker assembly.
  • Door or freezer ice maker. Door units in French-door models take longer to reach.
  • Water supply problems. A kinked or leaking supply line behind the fridge adds a small repair.
  • Model availability. Some ice maker modules are brand-specific and ordered.

The jobs this page covers

01

Ice Maker Not Making Ice

First we confirm the freezer is cold enough, because an ice maker will not cycle in a freezer sitting above about 15 degrees. Then we check the shutoff arm or the optical sensor, test the inlet valve for flow and for voltage when the ice maker calls for water, and look at the water filter. A clogged filter or a scaled valve is very common here. When the valve and the water supply are both fine and the module still will not fill or harvest, the ice maker module itself is worn out and gets replaced as a unit.

Water Dispenser Not Working

If ice still drops but no water comes from the door, the dispenser side of the inlet valve, the dispenser switch or a frozen line running through the door is the cause. If neither ice nor water works, the inlet valve or the filter is the usual suspect. We trace the water from the supply valve behind the fridge to the inlet valve, through the filter and up to the door before replacing anything. A water line frozen inside the door is thawed and the cause, often a door that does not fully close, is fixed.

03

Frozen Fill Tube

A valve that keeps dripping after it shuts, or low water pressure that leaves a trickle sitting in the tube, lets water freeze in the fill tube into a solid plug. After that the ice maker cycles but nothing reaches the tray. We thaw the tube with steam, then find out why it froze in the first place and fix that cause, usually a leaking valve or a supply line with too little pressure. Thawing it without fixing the cause just means the same empty ice bin again within a week.

Jacksonville water and ice maker valves

Jacksonville tap water comes from the Floridan aquifer through limestone, so most homes have moderate to hard water. The minerals collect on the small screen and seat inside the ice maker's inlet valve, which slowly cuts the flow until the cubes come out small and hollow. If your filter is overdue, we replace it with the valve, and if your home has a softener we check it is still regenerating.

Step by step

How we fix an ice maker

  1. 1

    Check the freezer temperature

An ice maker cannot work in a warm freezer, so we confirm that first.

  2. 2

    Test the water side

Filter, supply line, inlet valve flow and voltage.

  3. 3

    Test the ice maker

Force a harvest cycle and check the module and sensors.

  4. 4

    Run a cycle

We watch a fill and harvest before leaving.
