Refrigerator Repair
Not cooling, leaking, noisy or frosting over. We find the failed part and fix most brands in your kitchen.
DetailsSealed-system work is the deep end of refrigerator repair. Before anyone recommends it, every simpler cause has to be ruled out, and you need an honest comparison with the price of a new refrigerator.

A sealed-system repair in Jacksonville covers compressor replacement, refrigerant leak repair and evaporator or condenser coil replacement. We first rule out fans, relays and defrost faults, then confirm the sealed-system failure, and only then quote it beside the cost of replacing the refrigerator.
The sealed system is the compressor, the condenser coil, the evaporator coil and the tubing that carries refrigerant between them. Because opening it means recovering refrigerant, brazing and recharging, it costs far more than a fan or relay repair. That is why a correct diagnosis matters more here than anywhere else.
Plenty of refrigerators get condemned for a bad compressor when the real problem was a start relay, a capacitor or a frosted coil. We test the compressor windings and amperage, check the relay and overload, and look at the frost pattern on the evaporator before we call it a sealed-system job.
Cost
Sealed-system repairs are quoted individually after the failure is confirmed. They take several hours, use refrigerant, a new filter drier and often a new compressor, so the total is well above an ordinary refrigerator repair. We always put the number next to what a comparable new unit would cost you.
No flat price over the phone. We price after the diagnosis, part and labor separately, so you can decide before any work starts.

The jobs this page covers
A compressor that hums and trips its overload, draws far more amps than its rating, or tests open or shorted across its windings has failed. Replacing it is the biggest refrigerator repair there is. The refrigerant is recovered, the old compressor is cut out, the new one is brazed in with a new filter drier, the system is pulled into a deep vacuum and the correct charge is weighed in from the nameplate. It is a long visit, and on an older standard refrigerator it often makes more sense to replace the whole unit instead.

A partial frost pattern on the evaporator, a compressor that runs cool and never shuts off, and oily dust at a tubing joint are the classic signs of a leak. We locate it with an electronic detector and bubble solution, then decide whether it can be repaired. A leak at an accessible joint or in the condenser tubing can usually be brazed and recharged. Leaks inside the foamed cabinet walls usually cannot be repaired economically, and we will tell you so before any money is spent on a recharge that will not hold.
Evaporator coils can pinhole from slow corrosion, or get punctured by someone chipping ice off the back wall with a knife or a screwdriver. Either way the refrigerant leaks out and the freezer slowly loses its cold. Replacing the coil is a sealed-system job done behind the freezer panel: recover the charge, swap the coil, replace the filter drier, evacuate and recharge. Before quoting it we check whether a replacement coil is still made for your model, because on older refrigerators the part is sometimes no longer available.
Homes close to the water at Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach live in salt-laden air, and exposed copper and aluminum tubing corrodes faster there than it does inland. When we find a leak on a refrigerator near the ocean, we look hard at every other joint and coil before quoting, because a second leak a few months later is the expensive surprise you want to avoid.
Step by step
Relay, overload, fans, defrost and coils tested first.
Compressor amperage and windings, frost pattern, leak search.
We give you both numbers and our honest recommendation.
Recover, braze, new drier, vacuum, weighed charge, then a run test.
Timing
Diagnosis takes one visit. The repair itself usually fills most of a day because the system has to be pulled into a deep vacuum before the new charge goes in. After that the box needs several hours to reach temperature, so plan coolers for the full day.
FAQ
A hum followed by a click every few minutes, a compressor that is hot but not cooling, or one that never starts can all point to it, but a start relay causes the same symptoms. Testing the windings and amperage is the only way to be sure.
On a refrigerator under about eight years old in good condition, or on a high-end built-in, often yes. On an older standard model the repair can approach the price of a new unit, and we will tell you so.
Refrigerators are sealed and do not use up refrigerant. If it is low, there is a leak, and adding refrigerant without fixing the leak only delays the same failure.
Usually most of a day once the parts are in hand, because the system has to be evacuated and charged correctly.
Plan to keep food in coolers for the day of the repair and for several hours after while the refrigerator pulls down to temperature.
