Microwave repair in Jacksonville, over-the-range and built-in

Microwaves store a dangerous charge in their high-voltage circuit even when unplugged, which is why the repair belongs with a technician. The usual failures, though, are a handful of well-known parts.

  • Drawer microwaves
  • High-voltage safe

Over-the-range microwave being removed for repair in Jacksonville
Quick answer

Microwave repair in Jacksonville usually means a failed high-voltage diode, capacitor or magnetron, a blown fuse, a door switch, or a keypad and control fault. We discharge the circuit safely, test each part, and tell you whether the repair makes sense against replacing the unit.

Why a microwave runs but does not heat

A microwave that lights up, spins and hums but leaves food cold has lost its high-voltage side: the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor or the transformer. A microwave that does nothing at all usually blew a fuse, often because a door switch failed. Each of those has a specific test.

Over-the-range and built-in microwaves cost more than countertop units, and they also serve as the range hood or fit a trim kit, which is why repairing them often makes more sense than replacing them. On a cheap countertop microwave we will tell you plainly if replacement is the better choice.

Cost

What microwave repair costs

Microwave repairs range from a door switch or fuse to a magnetron. The range here is national cost data for microwave repairs. Countertop microwaves are rarely worth a magnetron repair; over-the-range and built-in units often are.

  • Type of microwave. Built-in and drawer units have pricier parts.
  • High-voltage parts. A diode costs less than a magnetron.
  • Removal from the wall. Over-the-range removal adds labor.
  • Vent fan and light. Usually modest repairs.

Over-the-Range Microwave Repair

Over-the-range microwaves double as the range vent, so a failed vent fan or light is as common a call as a heating problem. Many repairs can be done with the unit on the wall, but magnetron and transformer work usually means taking it down onto a padded counter. We support it during removal and remount it on its wall plate afterward. While it is down we check the grease filter and the charcoal filter, because clogged filters overheat the vent fan motor.

Built-In and Drawer Microwaves

Built-in microwaves sit in a trim kit in the cabinetry, and drawer microwaves slide out under the counter on their own rails and motor. Drawer models add a drawer motor, a gear rack and sensors that tell the drawer when it is open or closed, and those wear with use. We slide built-ins out of the trim to service them and test drawer mechanisms through several open and close cycles before we call the repair done. A drawer that hesitates on the first try usually has a worn gear rack.

Microwave Not Heating

A microwave that runs without heating has lost its high-voltage circuit. We discharge the capacitor before touching anything, then test the diode, the capacitor, the magnetron and the transformer, along with the thermal cutouts that shut the magnetron off when it overheats. A shorted diode is common and inexpensive. A magnetron is a larger repair, and on an older or low-cost unit we will tell you if replacement is the better value before you spend money. Every repair ends with a timed water heating test.

What is included

What our microwave visit covers

  • Safe capacitor discharge
  • Fuse and door switch tests
  • Diode, capacitor and magnetron tests
  • Vent fan and light check
  • Grease and charcoal filter check
  • Water heating output test

Microwaves above Jacksonville gas ranges

Many kitchens around Jacksonville use an over-the-range microwave as the only vent over a gas range, so its fan carries heat, steam and grease every night. When that fan gets loud or slows down, we clean or replace the grease filters at the same visit and check that the microwave is set to vent outside or to recirculate the way it was installed.
